Twist & Shout as played by The Beatles Tabbed by Marc Hertzberg (hertzberg@cornmuffin.com) of HELP! (cornmuffin.com/help) Intro: D G A7 -|---------------------------------------- -|--------------------------8--8--8--8---- -|--------------------------6--6--6--6---- repeat 2X -|--------------4-----------5--5--5--5---- -|--0--2--4--5--5--5--5--7---------------- -|-----------------3--3--5---------------- The above pretty much repeats throughout the whole song. If you look close, you'll see it's really built around standard D7, G, and A7 chords... these ones... D7 G A7 -|-------3----5---- -|--3----3----8---- -|--5----4----6---- -|--4----5----5---- -|--5----5----7---- -|-------3----5---- ...but I tend to leave out quite a few notes. Gotta leave holes in the sound for the other lads to fill. Now what are the guitars doing on the middle part? The standard version of the riff goes like this. D G A G -|---------------------------- -|-----------3--2--2---------- -|--------4--4--2--2--4--2---- repeat four times -|--4--4--5-----------5--4---- -|--5--5---------------------- -|---------------------------- Often, there's clearly a slide up into the notes of the G chord... D G A G -|------------------------------ -|-------------3--2--2---------- -|--------3/4--4--2--2--4--2---- -|--4--4--4/5-----------5--4---- -|--5--5------------------------ -|------------------------------ ... and maybe even when it comes back down to those notes, too... D G A G -|-------------------------------- -|-------------3--2--2------------ -|--------3/4--4--2--2--3/4--2---- -|--4--4--4/5-----------4/5--4---- -|--5--5-------------------------- -|-------------------------------- OK so far. You have to listen carefully for yourself to as many versions as you can get your hands on and do what you like. But what always bugged me on various boots of audio and video performances were other notes, perhaps played by John, never very clear. Lately, I spent a few hours scouring various sources and heard quite a few variations which seemed to be centered around 6th chords... making the G a G6 chord and also which make the A an A6 chord. So lately, I've been playing around with the following... D G G6 A -|----------------- ... -|-----------5--2-- ... -|--------4--4--2-- ... -|--4--4--5--5--2-- ... -|--5--5----------- ... -|----------------- ... and also... D G A6 -|-----------2--2-- ... -|-----------3--2-- ... -|--------4--4--2-- ... -|--4--4--5-------- ... -|--5--5----------- ... -|----------------- ... I like this last one quite a bit, and heard it very clearly on I_forget_which recording. It was probably a goof. ;^) With my band now, I play some combinations of all of the above when we perform the song. Again, listen for yourself and play what you like and/or what you hear or think you hear. As for the finale, there's no doubt about the ascending chromatic scale, but I've seen the final chord, a D9, played two ways. Either... -|--------------------5--- -|--------------------5--- -|--------------------5--- -|--------------------4--- -|--0--1--2--3--4--5--5--- -|------------------------ ... or my preference, which is ... -|--------------------5--- -|--------------------5--- -|--------------------5--- -|--------------------7--- -|--0--1--2--3--4--5--5--- -|------------------------ Remember to take a synchronized bow at the end of this one. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tab Special Notations: ---5/7--- play fret five, slide up to fret seven ---7\5--- play fret seven, slide down to fret five --8b(9)-- play fret eight, bend the string (at fret eight) to reach the pitch of fret nine --b(9)8-- play fret eight already bent to the pitch of fret nine, unbending until it reaches the normal pitch of fret eight ---/7---- slide up to fret 7 (the starting fret of the slide is undefined, judge by ear) ---15\--- play fret 15, slide down (the ending fret of the slide is undefined, judge by ear) ---1h3--- play fret one and hammer-on to fret three ---7p5--- play fret seven and pull-off to fret five -7b(9)r7- play fret seven, bend up to fret nine, release back to fret seven --5h7p5-- play fret five, hammer on to fret seven, pull off to fret five
